Christoph Kolumbus, um 1451 in Genua geboren, war ein italienischer Entdecker, bekannt für seine Reise 1492, die zur Entdeckung Amerikas führte. Unterstützt von den spanischen Monarchen segelte er mit den Schiffen Santa María, Pinta und Niña, landete am 12. Oktober auf einer Bahamas-Insel und nannte sie San Salvador, in dem Glauben, Indien erreicht zu haben. Kolumbus unternahm insgesamt vier Reisen, erkundete Teile der Karibik sowie Mittel- und Südamerikas. Seine Expeditionen eröffneten den Europäern die Neue Welt, hatten jedoch auch tiefgreifende negative Auswirkungen auf die indigenen Völker. Kolumbus starb 1506 in Spanien, ohne die volle Tragweite seiner Entdeckungen zu erkennen.
