Victorian Silver Gilt Rock Crystal Mano Figa Hand PendantThe Figa symbol, with a history dating back 8,000 years, depicts a hand with the thumb situated between the index and middle fingers. The Figa symbol, with a history dating back 8,000 years, depicts a hand with the thumb situated between the index and middle fingers. The term "Mano Figa" originates from Etruscan Italy, where "Mano" means hand and "Figa" refers to the slang term for a woman's private parts. These objects were traditionally worn as an incantation to the goddesses, and a plea for fertility, virility, and prosperity (with close connections to Bacchus). These symbols were typically crafted from sacred materials such as silver or blood coral, representing Luna, the goddess of the moon, and Venus, the goddess of the sea, respectively.

Throughout South America's history of colonisation, the Figa symbol gained widespread recognition and, starting in the early 17th century, was produced in the region due to the influence of Christianity. Today, the figa is frequently worn in Brazil and Peru as a protective symbol against the evil eye. Its vulgar gesture is believed to divert Satan's attention away from tempting one's soul. Due to its association with femininity and motherhood, it is customary in Brazil to tie a small black figa onto a child's wrist for warding off misfortune.

It looks stunning on a chain, or simply as a curiosity - and it will certainly be a talking point!

Received Damaged
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
I absolutely cannot wait to start reading this book! However, I am just so sad that it was damaged upon arrival. It was a bit pricey to live with a damaged "new" book.

One of the most important books of recent decades
Format: Paperback
It’s daunting (many of Robinson’s footnotes are like fascinating blogposts about history, so it’s a lot to get through, let alone think about. But Robinson's deeply-researched account of a Black radicalism independent of European ideas is enlightening. Robin Kelley's introduction to the new edition is worth reading on its own.

Loved by an 8 year old
I bought this for my friend’s son when they were taking an 8 hour train ride to Washington DC. He loved the activities and reading about all of the DC sites! It kept him occupied for the majority of the train ride and he carried it with him when they went site seeing! It was age appropriate and developmentally appropriate as well. Just make sure to pack a pencil and crayons too!

Excellent for Elementary Aged Kids!
We bought a second after seeing how great this travel guide is so both of our elementary age kids could have their own. I will buy this brand of travel guide anytime we go anywhere they offer one. It is informative but also has lots of different activities. I highly recommend this.
