❃ Mature males develop a curious bulbous growth at the tip of the snout called a ghara — Hindi for "pot" — used to amplify hisses and blow courtship bubbles during the breeding season. Adults can stretch beyond four metres, with laterally compressed tails built for powerful swimming and legs so weak they can barely walk on land. They are rarely seen far from the water.
❃ Once spread across more than 20,000 kilometres of South Asian river, the gharial has lost over 96% of its historic range to dams, fishing nets, and habitat loss. Fewer than 700 wild adults remain today, most of them within a single sanctuary on the Chambal River — making this one of the rarest crocodilians in the world.
