Beautiful Mornin': The Broadway Musical in the 1940s"Music and girls are the soul of musical comedy," one critic wrote, early in the 1940s. "Music and girls are the soul of musical comedy," one critic wrote, early in the 1940s. But this was the age that wanted more than melody and kickline form its musical shows. The form had been running on empty for too long, as a formula for the assembly of spare parts--star comics, generic love songs, rumba dancers, Ethel Merman. If Rodgers and Hammerstein hadn't existed, Broadway would have had to invent them; and Oklahoma! and Carousel came along just in time to announce the New Formula for Writing Musicals: Don't have a formula.Instead, start with strong characters and atmosphere: Oklahoma!'s murderous romantic triangle set against a frontier society that has to learn what democracy is in order to deserve it; or Carousel's dysfunctional family seen in the context of class and gender war.
With the vitality and occasionally outrageous humor that Ethan Mordden's readers take for granted, the author ranges through the decade's classics--Pal Joey, Lady in the Dark, On the Town, Annie Get Your Gun, Phinian's Rainbow, Brigadoon, Kiss Me, Kate, South Pacific. He also covers illuminating trivia--the spy thriller The Lady Comes Across, whose star got so into her role that she suffered paranoid hallucinations and had to be hospitalized; the smutty Follow the Girls, damned as "burlesque with a playbill" yet closing as the longest-run musical in Broadway history; Lute Song, in which Mary Martin and Nancy Reagan were Chinese; and the first "concept" musicals, Allegro and Love Life. Amid the fun, something revolutionary occurs. The 1920s created the musical and the 1930s gave it politics. In the 1940s, it found its soul.

Trashed after one wash
Color: Beige, Size: Small
It’s a great looking shirt. The price is good. The fit is good. But it’s so scratchy that it’s like wearing a potato sack. And after washing it ONCE it pilled so bad that I had to throw it away because it looked like an electrical sander had been used on it. But this is what Amazon has become: bad quality everything.

Coofandy has cool shirts!
Size: Large, Color: Army Green
Love this brand. Everything fits! Husband loves the sort of linen shirts.
I buy a lot of clothes there too. Go for it. The price is right and if you don't like it, return it, but I think you'll love it!

Not as advertised, but I like it! This run runs small and not the blend stated.
Size: 4X-Large, Color: Sky Blue
I rely on your reviews a lot, so I am paying it forward here. I needed a summery, lightweight linen type shirt with long sleeves because I'm an old, fat guy and I'm getting those ugly, purple bruises on my arms (if you're under 65, just wait ;). I just got my shirt today. I read the reviews and everybody said the quality, sizing and the material were all over the board and mine is no different.
The label on mine says 60% cotton, 30% viscose and 10% linen. That's a far cry from the 70% Rayon and 30% Linen as stated. However, this material is very light and smooth and has a lot of stretch. The label can't be correct for the material to have this much stretch, but I like it.
It doesn't look anything like the picture either. It has a sort of linen like look, but more of a chambray weave look I would say. And it smells oddly nice, too. I'm sure whatever the smell is will go away after washing, but for now, it's a nice, pleasant, new shirt smell. Must be the Viscose or whatever is in this shirt. It definitely has at least 2% Lycra to be able to stretch like this.
Also, the sizing is way off. For reference, I am 5'6" and 270 with a 52" waist (I told you, old, short and fat :). Many of the reviewers said it ran small, so I ordered up to a 4x and it fits just about perfectly for me. I normally wear a 3x and in some shirts that's too big. This is loose enough but not blousey and most importantly, covers my big belly nicely. The stretch in the fabric is a bonus. So I guessed right with the 4x. However, read the reviews and you will see that the sizing appears to be all over the board.
Finally, the pocket is oddly small. It is fine for my purposes and I absolutely need a pocket to put my sunglasses in and other various little things, but at least in my version, beware that the pocket is oddly small.
I think I got lucky with my order and got what I wanted by default. I will have to be careful washing it, or it might shrink too much (there's no telling what this fabric really is). It is also fairly wrinkled out of the package, but being the cotton/viscose blend that it says it is, it should iron out nicely and not wrinkle with wearing. We shall see.
I'm impressed with the silky feeling and light weight of this shirt and although it doesn't really look like a linen shirt, it looks casual enough for me to fit the bill. I will be wearing it with the sleeves rolled up anyway, as I just needed something that looks casually sharp and can cover the ugly bruises on my forearms. As you can tell if you read through the reviews, what you might get seems to be somewhat of a crap shoot, but I like mine, so good luck!
