Porcelain vs. ceramic: why is it different?
Porcelain is fired at a much higher temperature than ordinary ceramic — between 1200 and 1400°C for porcelain, compared to only 900 to 1100°C for classic ceramic. This firing difference radically changes the properties of the final material: porcelain becomes harder, denser, less porous, and acquires a subtle translucency characteristic of fine porcelains. Its enameled surface is smoother, shinier, and more resistant to stains and odors.
For a cigar ashtray, these properties are essential: the non-porous surface does not retain stale tobacco odors unlike ordinary ceramic, and cleaning is done in a few seconds with water.
