The PhoenixUSB started as an internal problem. Innuos was building the Statement — their flagship server — and the USB output stage demanded clocking precision and power supply isolation that didn't exist in any available solution. So they engineered it themselves. The Statement's USB circuitry became one of the most discussed aspects of the product. Then someone at Innuos made the obvious move: put that USB stage in its own box, make it work with any source.
Five-plus years later, with awards from nearly every major English and European publication that reviewed it, the PhoenixUSB remains the benchmark against which USB reclockers are measured.
The Engineering
3ppb OCXO clock at 24MHz, board-mounted adjacent to the USB chip so no precision is lost through cabling. LT3045 linear regulators on every independent voltage rail to the USB chip — no switching regulators anywhere in the power path. Clean, regulated 5V delivered to your DAC rather than whatever happens to ride in on the USB cable's power conductors. These are the same specifications as the PhoenixUSB Board that fits inside the STREAM and ZEN Next-Gen servers — in a standalone chassis with a more substantial power supply.
What It Does
Place it between any USB source and your DAC. The PhoenixUSB receives the USB signal, reclocks it against the OCXO reference, and outputs a regenerated USB signal with jitter reduced to the level that the 3ppb clock allows. DACs with their own USB receivers benefit — cleaner input means less error correction and less ground noise from the receiver working harder than necessary.
Press Recognition
The Innuos PhoenixUSB has received awards from Hi-Fi+, What Hi-Fi, and Hifi News, among others. Jason Kennedy at Hi-Fi+ called it transformative for streaming audio quality. The coverage spans English, European, and Asian publications consistently over five years.
