As the opening chapter in a year honouring 20 years of collaboration with Castle Fine Art, Beyond The Horizon balances reflection with momentum.

A tribute to two decades of artistic innovation and a powerful exploration of landscape as a metaphor for growth, resilience and transformation, Rowan invites us not only to contemplate the landscape before us, but to embrace the journey ahead, and the boundless possibility that lies just beyond view.

Inspired by journeys driving through Scotland with his family, particularly the dramatic landscapes en route to the Isle of Skye, Rowan captures the stillness of forest paths and the commanding presence of mountain peaks. The composition is intentionally directional, guiding the eye upward into the sky, where the greatest transformation unfolds.

While the path mirrors the rhythm of life itself: constant progression, quiet determination and the pull of something just beyond reach, Beyond The Horizon speaks to anticipation and aspiration – it’s a meditation on change, perseverance and wonder, all encountered along a single path.

Working with such technical mastery and continual reinvention; Rowan remains at the forefront of his field, advancing a method that is entirely his own.

The landscape foreground, originally painted by Rowan, is recreated using a reverse giclée printing technique, meticulously applied in layers to low-iron tempered glass. Working directly onto the reverse of the printed glass, Rowan hand-paints every sky in oil. In this exacting process, highlights and the finest details are laid down first, followed by successive layers that build atmosphere, depth and luminosity. It is a method that demands extraordinary foresight and control — every mark considered, every layer intentional.
