The HPE Smart Array P816i-a SR Gen10 Controller is a high-performance PCIe storage accelerator designed for modern HPE Gen10 servers. Engineered to deliver 12Gb/s SAS throughput with a 4 GB flash-backed write cache (FBWC), it brings exceptional reliability, resilience, and speed to enterprise workloads. This controller operates in Mixed Mode, enabling simultaneous RAID and HBA operations to maximize flexibility for both traditional storage arrays and direct-attached server configurations. Whether you’re running databases, virtualization, or heavy I/O applications, the P816i-a Gen10 is built to optimize I/O latency, improve data protection, and simplify storage management across complex deployments.

  • 12 Gb/s SAS with advanced data path efficiency: The P816i-a Gen10 leverages the high-speed 12Gb/s SAS interface to deliver sustained throughput and low-latency I/O for demanding workloads. Its architecture is optimized to handle large, sequential transfers and concurrent I/O streams, helping to reduce bottlenecks in busy data centers. This makes it well-suited for databases, analytics, and virtualization environments where consistent performance is critical.
  • PCIe 3.0 integration for robust bandwidth: Built to plug into PCIe 3.0 infrastructure, the controller achieves excellent bandwidth headroom within standard server platforms. This ensures that multiple disks or drive enclosures connected to the controller can operate at high speed without contending for I/O resources with other peripherals. The PCIe 3.0 interface is a key factor in achieving predictable latency and scalable performance as storage requirements grow.
  • 4 GB FBWC for superior data integrity: The flash-backed write cache (FBWC) provides a protective write-back mechanism that safeguards data during unexpected power loss or system outages. By maintaining a durable cache in flash memory, the P816i-a Gen10 helps minimize write data loss, accelerating write-heavy workloads and enabling more reliable throughput during peak I/O operations. This feature is essential for mission-critical applications that require strong data protection guarantees.
  • Mixed Mode operation for maximum flexibility: Mixed Mode allows the controller to perform RAID operations while simultaneously presenting direct access (HBA) to attached disks. This dual capability is ideal for environments that need to support both traditional RAID arrays and pass-through disk access for certain servers or virtual machines. Mixed Mode reduces the need for separate controllers and simplifies management when diverse storage access patterns exist in a single chassis or rack.
  • Supports advanced RAID configurations and enterprise resilience: The P816i-a Gen10 is designed to support a range of RAID levels and storage configurations, enabling administrators to tailor protection and performance to the workload. With robust data protection features, hot-swappable components, and enterprise-grade reliability, this controller helps organizations build scalable storage pools that can grow with business requirements while maintaining data integrity and recoverability during drive failures or rebuilds.

How to Install HPE Smart Array P816i-a SR Gen10 Controller

Preparing for installation involves ensuring you have power disconnected and proper static grounding. The following steps outline a straightforward installation process designed to minimize downtime while maximizing card performance and reliability. Always refer to your server’s service manual for specific slot placement and cabling guidelines, and ensure compatible drive types and cabling are used to prevent performance bottlenecks.

  • Power down the server and remove the chassis cover. Ground yourself and any tools to prevent electrostatic discharge, then locate an available PCIe slot with enough clearance for the P816i-a Gen10 controller and its heat dissipation profile.
  • Insert the P816i-a Gen10 card firmly into the chosen PCIe slot, ensuring that the connectors are seated completely. Secure the card with the chassis screw or retention mechanism as required by your server model.
  • Attach SAS or SATA data cables to the controller’s ports and connect the other ends to your drive enclosures or backplane as dictated by your storage architecture. Use high-quality cables and avoid excessive bending to maintain signal integrity.
  • Power on the server and access the system firmware or management console. Install or update the HPE Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) or integrated management tools to recognize the new controller and to configure the FBWC and cache settings.
  • Initialize and configure your storage in SSA: define logical arrays (RAID groups), assign hot spares, and set up mixed-mode if you plan to use both RAID and pass-through. Validate that all connected drives are detected and that the cache policy aligns with your protection and performance goals.
  • Verify successful boot and run a basic storage test to confirm that the controller is functioning as expected. Monitor for any firmware or driver updates that may enhance compatibility and performance, and apply them according to HPE guidelines.
  • Document your configuration details, including RAID levels, cache settings, and drive mappings, to simplify future maintenance and upgrades. Regularly check for firmware updates and backup configurations to maintain data protection and system resilience.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

Fantastic writing and non-stop action
Format: Kindle
This is a promising, fantastic beginning to what will be a 4-book series. Some readers may be content to read only the first 2 books, but I think you'll find that the story is so good that you'll want to keep reading books 3 and 4. Book 1 is about omega Elvana's introduction to the "Starling" brothers and their search for another missing person, Kelly. It's a bit of a rocky start, with deception and betrayal a key element. Hardly an auspicious beginning. Each member has their own path and purpose in the pack. Their interactions and the resulting narrative are so well-written that I found it difficult to put down. There is a cliffhanger that will have you reaching for book 2 as you finish, so make sure you have it on hand.

Fun read
Format: Kindle
I'm not really into mafia books but I love Roxy Collin's other series so I decided to give it a try. It had the same great romance, spice, swoon-worthy characters and exciting plot that are her signature. Arben was my favorite, although it was a bit sudden how quickly he changed from ignoring her to wanting to be pack. There were almost too many twists/layers of lies to keep track of but I'm looking forward to reading the other books. The only thing that detracted from the story for me was the need for a bit more proofreading. It was mentioned that Kelly is a female and male at different points, leading me to think she changed her mind at some point about the character's gender but didn't go back and edit it to align in all places. Like another reviewer pointed out, step siblings are different than half siblings. They are incorrectly referred to as step siblings because they (allegedly) share the same biological dad. There are a few other typos as well but those aren't a big deal.
