'This Edition entirely cancels all previous editions' printed at foot of title. These are the extremely rare in-house regulations of one of the largest passenger transport and shipping companies. The ethos, aims, conduct (smoking, drinking, wives, gambling, 'discretion in talk'), rules for navigation, treatment of passengers, health and safety, are prescribed in this book, which was not to be seen by outsiders. On the verso of the title is the printed note This book is the property of the Company and is to be returned to the Dock Superintendent when an officer leaves the service.
